Researchers in the United Kingdom and Germany have found an industrially scalable process for making flexible polymer opal films that can change colors under certain conditions. The new method could lead to several novel commercial applications, including food packaging that would indicate when the contents have spoiled or dollar bills that would reveal if they’ve been counterfeited.
