Few innovations have had as far-reaching an impact on humanity as the internet. While the modern communications infrastructure relies on many different technologies, one of the most important contributors to the continued growth in global bandwidth capacity is the development of new optical technologies. Innovations in optical communications have enabled a 100,000-fold increase in per-cable bandwidth over the past 30 years.
