Optics and photonics companies are reporting strong profit margins—but worker shortages may hold back growth.

Consumer price inflation—brought on by supply shortages, government stimulus spending and rising oil prices—has dominated much of this year’s news. As of this writing, however, some indicators suggest that US producer prices may be peaking generally and may already have peaked in several optoelectronic products. Longer term, prices of optics and photonics products trend downward, which enables wider adoption, including into new applications that require lower-priced components (see OPN, January 2022, Market Report).
