Our lives would be hard to imagine without artificial lighting illuminating our indoor and outdoor environments. New technologies emerging in this area will become ever more noticeable in the near future. Lighting powered by laser diodes is making rapid advances, and promises to be nearly as pervasive in coming years as LED lighting is today. In fact, certain applications such as retail lighting and movie projection are so well matched with the capabilities of laser-based lighting that these areas will likely be completely taken over by sources pumped by semiconductor diode lasers. This feature offers a look at the increasing scope of laser-driven lighting.
