In OPN’s December “Optics in 2020” review of interesting research, Guillermo D. Brinatti Vazquez and colleagues reported on their recent work using a recently developed deconvolution algorithm, SUPerposition of POint Sources (SUPPOSe). Through enhancements of the computational technique, the team is able to provide edge detection in single standard images with features much smaller than the original microscope’s point-spread function—a potential boon in areas ranging from quantitative cell biology to nanophotonics.
The videos below show the algorithm’s edge-detection abilities in action on targets including parallel lines, a star shape and microbeads.
