Social Media Illuminate Optics

If you believe that online tools like Facebook and Twitter are just for college kids and celebrities, think again. Social media sites are revolutionizing the way in which busy professionals—including optical scientists—get their news, network, and learn about industry-specific events.

This year, I learned that three optics professionals had won the Nobel Prize in Physics through Twitter. I received a “tweet” from OSA’s former student chapter liaison KiKi L’Italien that said: “We know that optics = awesomeness...Happily, so do the Nobel Prize folks.” The post included a link to an article with more information about the breaking news.
