French physicist Alain Aspect has worked in the field of quantum optics since 1974. Early in his career at Institut d'Optique, he began conducting experiments on the foundations of quantum mechanics, by testing Bell's inequalities with pairs of correlated photons. They culminated with his conclusion in 1982 that quantum mechanics was correct in its description of quantum entanglement—a finding that paved the way for modern quantum physics research.
