I have a deep and abiding interest in unusual topics in science, so perhaps it’s not surprising that I wrote my bachelor’s thesis at MIT, USA, on the physics of karate. I was fortunate to be working in the laboratory of Harold E. “Doc” Edgerton, who allowed me to use his strobe equipment, studio and darkroom. I took strobe photos of students from the local dojo executing strikes or breaking boards and used strobe lights to “freeze” their motions.
