The release of ChatGPT brought mainstream attention to artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models. Optics can enable machine learning (ML)—a type of AI used to train such models—in many ways, including through interconnects in the data centers that make ChatGPT possible and through neuromorphic processors. ML models can also be used to enhance optical systems in ways that are downstream or separate from the system itself.
