Data traffic via the subsea optical-fiber cable network is expected to double in the next three years. Attracting talent to design, engineer and maintain the system is an industry challenge. To help address this issue, the OSA Foundation (OSAF), in partnership with Google, held its inaugural Subsea Optical Fiber Communications International School in Joensuu, Finland, 4–10 August. Attendees from 31 countries learned about submarine-system design, submarine powering, cable technology and career pathing. Companies such as NEC Corp., Facebook, Google, Nokia, OFS, Orange, SubCom and others were on hand to network and recruit. Read more at SubseaOFC.com.
