In late February, Nobel laureate and 2013 OSA President Donna Strickland—who is also a steering-committee member of the International Photonics Advocacy Coalition (IPAC), OSA’s initiative to advance global visibility and funding for photonics research—visited with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Canadian MPs, and students, talking about optics, environmental sensing and her own groundbreaking research. In March, Strickland visited the University of Bordeaux, France, the hub of a thriving photonics cluster, where she spoke further on environmental sensing.
