Controlling Microbeads with a Singular Beam

In OPN’s December “Optics in 2015” review of interesting research conducted in the previous year, Z. Chen and colleagues describe their use of spiraling singular beams of light, which carry orbital angular momentum, to set single, minute polystyrene beads into spiral motion, as shown in the accompanying video.
