Presidential Profile: Boris Peter Stoicheff

Boris Peter Stoicheff was OSA’s 1976 President and a key player in the laser spectroscopy revolution. He was a dedicated researcher, teacher, author and friend.

Boris Stoicheff was born 1 June 1924 in Bitola, Macedonia, in the kingdom of Yugoslavia, and emigrated to Canada with his parents and sisters in 1931. In his formative years, he developed an interest in mathematics and critical thinking. These interests continued through his adulthood and inspired him to pursue a B.S. in engineering physics in 1947 and a Ph.D. in experimental physics in 1950 at the University of Toronto. Stoicheff conducted his doctoral studies under the direction of Harry Welsh. His thesis was titled “Raman spectroscopy of gases at high pressures.”
