28 August, 2015— Virtual-reality company Avegant (Redwood City, Calif., USA) announced this week the completion of a Series B round of funding for US$24 million to ramp up product development of its next-generation wearable near-eye display, Glyph. The private Chinese investor Lian Luo of Hangzhou Liaison Interactive Information Technology led the round, joined by previous investors Intel Capital and NHN Investment, and new investor, Bunting Family Fund.
Avegant’s Glyph wearable display uses retinal imaging, micro-mirror arrays with two million mirrors, and patented optics technology to provide realistic, sharp, solid images without visible pixels, for military and consumer applications like virtual gaming or movie watching. The headset works like over-the-ear high-fidelity audio headphones; when desired, the headpiece flips down over the eyes to convert into a visor embedded with a virtual retinal display.
The company is currently testing the engineering of the product, to be followed by design validation and production validation testing. The Glyph is scheduled for product release by the end of 2015.
