Particle Detectors: Fundamentals and Applications

This book is an extensive treatise on ionizing radiation detectors, and in 18 chapters covers all the aspects necessary for the understanding of detectors and their applications. It starts from a historical overview and a summary of interactions of particle and matter and nonelectronic detectors and gas-filled detectors. Semiconductor detectors and photodetectors are then treated, along with Cerenkov detectors, transition radiation detectors and scintillators. Particle identification, calorimetry and detectors for cosmic particles complete the coverage of devices. The last two chapters are devoted to signal processing and acquisition systems for detector signals.

Starting from a thorough introduction of fundamentals easily understood by the non-specialist and arriving at the cutting edge of modern device application, this well-produced volume offers an important reference for researchers and students in physics and optics.
