
Artificial intelligence is reshaping how we live, work and conduct research. Yet many people do not realize how deeply optics and AI depend on—and advance—each other.
Optics is an enabler for AI in numerous areas, including much of the physical infrastructure needed to support the AI economy. Optical communications carry vast amounts of data between and within data centers, while advances in integrated and co-packaged optics promise faster, more energy-efficient connections between electronic hardware.
At the same time, AI is transforming optics and photonics research. Machine learning tools are helping scientists reconstruct and interpret images, optimize optical systems, design new materials and devices, and more. In other words, pushing the boundaries of what optical systems can do.
I observed this convergence firsthand during my recent term as editor-in-chief of Applied Optics. The Journal has always covered a broad range of topics, including imaging systems and optical information processing. However, in my final years as editor-in-chief, I saw a marked increase in papers incorporating an artificial intelligence or machine learning component. A 2022 feature issue of Applied Optics highlighted the growing use of AI in optical systems, noting that what once seemed like a specialized intersection was fast becoming part of the mainstream of our field.
OPN has explored different aspects of AI in the field of optics and photonics. In his January 2026 Market Report, “What is the ‘Next Big Thing?’,” Tom Hausken examined the optical technologies that will be needed to support the continued growth in AI. More recently, the cover feature in this issue of OPN explores the theme from a different perspective: how silicon microring resonators could reproduce behaviors of biological neurons and contribute to more energy-efficient neuromorphic computing.
These ideas will also be part of the broader conversation at the Frontiers in Optics and Laser Science (FiO+LS) conference, which will be held from 27 September to 1 October 2026 in Rochester, NY, USA. As Optica’s annual meeting, the event brings together fundamental research, emerging applications and industry perspectives through its technical conference and Science + Industry Showcase.
FiO+LS is also an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of our community at the Optica awards ceremony. Among those we will honor are Tony F. Heinz, recipient of the Frederic Ives Medal/Jarus W. Quinn Prize, Optica’s highest award; Margaret M. Murnane, our 2026 Honorary Member; and Duncan T. Moore, our 2025 Honorary Member, who will also be recognized at this year’s event. I congratulate them and all of our 2026 award and medal recipients. The program will also include a symposium honoring Joseph H. Eberly and his many contributions to optical science.
I hope to see many of you in Rochester. Whether through our publications, events or professional networks, Optica members are helping shape this rapidly developing field and ensuring that optics and photonics remains central to the future of AI.
