“It has now been a year since the identification of the source of the error that plagued the Hubble Space Telescope primary mirror. It is interesting to examine what the effect has been upon the optical industry, science, NASA, and the world at large. In a sense, this is the largest recall of an optical system in history. Has this history made a difference in the way business is done in the optical industry? … The effort to build a superb telescope primary failed because of the failure of a resolve to carry out a complete testing program.”
