A decades-old sublinear effect could be used to direct compact optical devices on a chip. Researchers at Stanford University (U.S.A.) have shown electrically tunable harmonic generation of light from a tiny plasmonic cavity (Science 333, 1720; doi: 10.1126/science.1207858).
