Optics Crosses the Andes

Although Chile is relatively small in population and geographic size, the country is quickly modernizing. It is making many important contributions to science, both locally and globally, and the field of optics is gaining momentum.

Over the past several years, a number of strong photonics research groups have emerged in Chile. They have helped to make optics—which has never been a main strength of Chilean science—into an important growth area.
