Barry Masters shares what he learned on his trip to Turkey as part of the OSA Fellow Travel Grant program.

It is part of the responsibility of scientific societies and museums to educate people of all ages about the complexities and applications of knowledge generated by scientists. This year, LaserFest—the international celebration of the 50th anniversary of the invention of the laser—has served as an excellent reminder of that. Scientists and engineers are also obliged to educate the public about science and its processes—as well as to inform their colleagues and the next generation of young people studying science about key developments.
