Over the years, several OSA members became history buffs who tracked the progress of the Society.

Within the Optical Society, Hilda Kingslake is best known as a historian, as she was the principal author of a splendid history of OSA that was compiled for the 50th anniversary of the Society and published in the March 1966 issue of the Journal of the Optical Society of America. She also wrote a history of the Institute of Optics for its 75th anniversary.
