As a result of the excited energy levels in rare earth doped fibers when pumped with a specific wavelength, population inversion can be achieved and a particular glow can be appreciated depending on the fiber composition.

Visualizing laser path with homemade clouds

Collimated laser light is only visible from the side when there are scattering particles in the air. A cup of liquid nitrogen below the image frame condenses the humidity in the air into tiny droplets of water and ice crystals that scatter the light in all directions. Scattered light also illuminates the whole cloud and visualizes the current patterns. In the background the part of the laser path coming approximately towards the camera can be seen.

Optical vortices
Optical vortices

In the above figure, different types of emojis are formed by embedding the fractional optical vortices in laser or Gaussian beam theoretically. Optical vortices are phase singularities in the light field, which creates dark hole. The different picture can be created by placing these singularities in the laser beam. Although I have made only theoretical images of emojis, one can use a spatial light modulator to generate experimental images. The emoji beam equation is plotted using Octave.
