Birefringence from an Airplane Window
A colorful display of stress birefringence is revealed when an airplane window is sandwiched between the crossed polarizers formed by a camera polarizing filter and partially polarized skylight. The birefringence is less visible at the bottom of the image where there is a shorter atmospheric scattering path. Photographed from an airplane over the Columbia River. —Joseph A.
