Optica and OPN mourn the loss of 2007 Optica President and Honorary Member Joseph Eberly, who passed away on 30 April 2025. Renowned for his seminal research in quantum optics and radiation physics, Eberly was both the Andrew Carnegie Professor of Physics and a professor of optics at the University of Rochester, USA, where he spent nearly six decades on the faculty. In 1995, with support from the National Science Foundation, he founded the Rochester Theory Center, establishing a hub for advanced theoretical work in quantum optics.
