U.S. President-elect Barack Obama has nominated OSA honorary member Steven Chu to be his Energy Secretary. Chu shared the 1997 Nobel Prize in physics with fellow OSA members Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and William D. Phillips. He has served as director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory since 2004. He was formerly the chairman of the physics department at Stanford University and head of the electronics research laboratory at Bell Labs.
