The Quantum Theory of Nonlinear Optics

This highly-recommended textbook and reference is suitable for graduate students and researchers with background knowledge of advanced quantum mechanics and classical electrodynamics. The authors include detailed, step-by-step derivations of all the equations, a clear discussion of the physics and its integration with the mathematics, lists of suggested books and articles, challenging problem sets, and a detailed index. A major part of the content covers field quantization in nonlinear media as applied to various physical situations and applications. The derivations are self-contained and mathematically rigorous. Mathematical approximations and limitations are also covered. The authors are rigorous in their pedagogy; for example, they provide a warning section on how not to quantize electromagnetic fields. The selection of topics includes coherence, decoherence, quantum field dynamics, quantum information and its paradoxes, Bell inequality and its derivation and quantum propagation in fibers and waveguides.
