If judged by the subtitle, one would expect this book to be devoted to biomedicine, with practical examples of how light scattering affects medical diagnostics or treatment. This is not the case—after an introductory chapter which briefly covers principles of light absorption, emission and scattering, the rest of the text is purely theoretical. Radiative transfer through scattering media is explored, starting from Maxwell’s equations and ending with inverse problems in scattering. With this in mind, I can recommend this book only to those who want to get a deep understanding of the mathematical principles behind light scattering theory. Those interested in light propagation in tissues and its applications should search for another book.
