Photonics Production in 2014: A Mixed Bag

Global photonics production advanced at a stronger rate than the broad economy last year, and looks poised for another good showing in 2015. But the regional details paint a more nuanced picture.

Global photonics production reached US$640 billion in 2014, up 8 percent year to year, according to early estimates by Taiwan’s Photonics Industry and Technology Development Association (PIDA), using categories accepted by both PIDA and the OSA Industry Development Associates (OIDA). The 2014 showing contrasts with the sharp downturn in 2009 and a smaller dip in 2012. OIDA expects growth of 5 to 8 percent in 2015, which is remarkable given the industry’s size.
