As one of the people responsible for a laser system the size of three football fields, Edward I. Moses has what you could call a big job. He is the principal associate director of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and Photon Science at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Moses is in charge of completing construction on NIF—which is the world’s largest and highest-energy laser system—and bringing the massive project into full operation. The state-of-the-art system contains 192 giant lasers housed in a ten-story building. It will deliver at least 80 times more energy than any previous system.
