Rainbow drops

Water droplets on a DVD exposed to a cellphone flashlight. The optical phenomena of diffraction (by the DVD microsocopic track), reflection (by the metallic label) and refraction (by the water drops) can be seen simultaneously. Pringles and pixels

There is a bulge at the centre of the lids to Pringles cans. Here, it's acting as a crude lens, magnifying part of the text "OSA" on a laptop screen. The screen's pixelation is visible, and chromatic aberration reveals the RGB nature of the display by separating the colours at the edges of pixels. Moire patterns are also visible, magnifying the regular grid of pixels.

Lanthanide Coating

Coating of Liquid Crystal Solution on a Glass Substrate; Lanthanide Complex meta-materials were fabricated in lab, and chemically synthesized to create a crystal solution that was deposited onto a glass substrate. The film was then illuminated under UV light (360nm).

Dichroic Wall Art 2

A light art sculpture using dichroic color filters, linear variable filters, and a single light source with a gobo to project a sheet of white light across the dichroic filters. The dichroic filters transmit certain wavelengths and reflect the non transmitted wavelengths. By using those properties and angles, one can mix colors and create amazing art.

Light trapped in a Drop

A liquid oil droplet in water with light trapped inside it. We use an optical fiber to (diagonal line) to launch light inside a droplet. The bright lines within the drop indicate the trapped light optical path.

Coincident Beams

This image is of an intermediate step during a Geometric Optics set-up in which we were finding the minimum deviation angle through a prism to find its refractive index at varying wavelengths. The image shows the result of coincident beams of differing wavelengths using a 632 nm He-Ne laser and a 450 nm Diode laser, a beam splitter, 2 irises and 4 mirrors. The image was taken in an optics lab in the CREOL building at the University of Central Florida.

Photons via Water-Drop

This image was created in MATLAB to study interaction of photons (black from left to right) with water droplets (thick circle) the cause of primary and secondary rainbows is perfectly explained by such simulations. The assumed round water shape makes it a beautiful art piece where multiple order reflection and refraction effects are captured. Thanks to Dr. Ping Yang at Texas A&M as I have learnt how to do this from him.
