“Optical fiber has now become the transmission medium of choice in almost all areas of telecommunications: undersea-cable systems, terrestrial long-haul networks, trunk lines linking switching offices in metropolitan areas, and subscriber loop systems serving end customers. More recently, the cable-television industry has been deploying optical fibers for trunking and distribution, and fiber local area networks have been introduced to extend the capability of computer networking. Approximately 60 million km of fiber have been installed in the world today. The double-digit growth rate continues unabated, as nations build and extend their information infrastructure and societies launch into the information age.”
