“By the time she was in seventh grade, Elsa Garmire knew she wanted to become a scientist—partly because that’s what her father was, but mostly because ‘that’s where all the power was. This was back in the ’50s, and scientists seemed to be able to save the world.’ In contrast, she notes, ‘women were supposed to stay home and take care of the house. That didn’t seem like a terribly powerful position to me; I was interested in doing more than that.’”
