Waveguides Made of Cells

In OPN’s December “Optics in 2017” review of interesting research, Anna Bezryadina and colleagues summarize their recent demonstration of a significant nonlinear response in microorganisms, in which self-trapping of light leads to the formation of “biological” optical waveguides made of suspended marine bacteria.
