In OPN’s December “Optics in 2016” review of interesting research, Zhigang Chen and colleagues described their development of optical tweezers that can stably trap and stretch a rod-shaped bacterium in the observing plane measure the force to separate a cluster of cells, offering a potential new photonic tool for manipulating biological samples.
