After receiving his Ph.D. from Oxford University in 1960, Austrian-born Herwig Kogelnik came to the United States as part of a program to recruit European scientists to work in America. When he arrived in the United States that year, he had more than 50 interviews with labs, universities and companies, all of which resulted in job offers.
