For most city dwellers, the Milky Way is just a picture in a book, thanks to the overwhelming night-sky brightness caused by light pollution. The Globe at Night project, led by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) in Tucson, Ariz., is characterizing this ever-growing sky brightness in the hope of reversing the trend.
